Illuminated Self: Yin and Philosophy
Illuminated Self: Yin and Philosophy
Tuesdays - 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
November 24 - December 15
Led by Tiger Abdur-Rahman (they/he)
Founder of Live Your Own Life
Class Description
Slowly structured sessions to steady the mind, tune into the body, strengthen the intellect, and cultivate discernment through dialogue and journaling.
We will leverage verses 2 through 11 of the first book in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras over these four weeks to explore our embodiment of mind and opportunities for guiding the mind with the intellect.
Yin yoga is an ideal accompaniment to svadhyaya (self-study) because it turns our attention inward in a way that is hard to ignore. This creates a concrete opportunity to observe the mind and explore the sutras in our bodies.
Week by week:
November 24: The body and the yogic mind
December 1: Knowledge and illusion
December 8: Imagination and the three states of consciousness
December 15: Memory and our sense of self
To prepare:
Wear comtortable, warm and loose titting clothing. Some poses can generate a lot of heat, so layers can also be supportive.
Bring a notebook and something to write with for journal prompts and anything you want to remember.
Arrive a few minutes early to gather the props you'll want.
Adjustable KN95s available at the door or bring your own!

Meet Tiger
Tiger Abdur-Rahman (they/he) is a COVID-realist, Black, queer, transmasculine design researcher, civic innovator, and student of yoga. They earned a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership and Learning which inspired them to deepen their study of yoga. They began teaching yoga in 2019, completed their 500 hours of yoga teacher training in 2020 and have been studying Vedanta philosophy in depth since 2021. Tiger has previously collaborated on organizing and teaching at three international yoga retreats, workshops, and serialized asana instruction, interweaving their knowledge of philosophy, astrology and ayurveda to support learners’ journeys.
Their karma yoga practice has recently brought them into full-time disaster recovery work in St. Louis, supporting the design of an ecosystem of supports for residents impacted by an EF-3 tornado in 2025.
Tiger’s offerings focus on personalizing the multiple pathways of yoga through media, movement, reflection, and dialogue to allow students to explore how yoga’s teachings go beyond asana to create a foundation for an authentic and fulfilling life.
